Marlborough Teen Gives Back

Marlborough teen and upcoming Classical Magnet sophomore Kyra Spencer participated in a life-changing summer experience. Kyra was accepted into Leadership Greater Hartford's Summer Nexus program , a week-long leadership program for urban and suburban youth, grades 10 to 12, that fosters connections and community involvement through interactive workshops and service learning activities.

According to Kyra, "I had an incredibly good experience in the Leadership Greater Hartford Summer Nexus program. I learned a lot; for example, during the diversity workshop I learned the difference between race and culture and how that applies to my every-day life.  On the tour of Hartford I learned a lot that I didn't know about the city, things that are important to the city's history and culture."

Spencer's  Summer Nexus cohort planned and implemented a community service project that partnered with The Lisa Lane Farm of the Wintonberry Land Trust. The students received donations of shovels, spades, garbage bags, etc. totaling over $700 and spent the day helping to clear the land and give the farm a spring cleaning. They also participated in various leadership workshops, activities, and had the opportunity to meet prominent community leaders.

Kyra credits the program with helping her "learn how to solve problems as a group and learn from the ideas of others. Even when we didn't get things right the first time, we worked to figure out better and more creative solutions."
