Special Olympics a Match for East Hampton Students

More than 100 high school students volunteer over the weekend.

More than 100 students from East Hampton High School volunteered at the Special Olympic 2012 Games at Southern Connecticut State University on June 9 and 10.

Student volunteers arrived at the high school at 6:30 a.m. and boarded a United Technologies-sponsored bus to New Haven. The students worked tirelessly all day to make the experience as fun and rewarding for the athletes as possible, and they succeeded in doing just that.

One coordinator of the event said, “We were just sitting here at eight o’clock in the morning and no volunteers were here to help. Then off in the distance we saw a large crowd of East Hampton students coming straight toward us and we knew everything was going to be great because they were here for us.”

This is the third year students from East Hampton have been volunteering at the Special Olympic Summer games. The ties between East Hampton High School, United Technologies and Special Olympics Connecticut continue to have a positive impact on the student volunteers, the athletes and their families and the community.
