
2015 Adult Summer Reading Program
This summer’s challenge is to “Escape the Ordinary” by exploring heroes, superheroes, and extraordinary people, places, and activities. It offers adults the opportunity to have fun, explore new interests, and to interact with other adults. Join in the extraordinary!
Summer Reading Club
Participants log the number of pages read to qualify to receive prizes. Online! They also have the option to write a review that will be shared with other “club members.”
The Gildersleeve Shipyard:
Tuesday, June 16th at 7 p.m.
Friends of Portland Library and the Portland Historical Society present “The Gildersleeve Shipyard” by Rick Gildersleeve in the Mary Flood Room. The presentation will cover the entire life of the shipyard including an extensively illustrated discussion of shipbuilding on the Connecticut River and the history of the ship, The USS Cayuga, which was built in the Gildersleeve Shipyard and which played a critical role in the Civil War.
Door prizes, from Gotta’s Farm, will be given away at the end of the program. This is a free event; to register call 860-342-6770.

After a near-fatal plane crash in WWII, Olympian Louis Zamperini spends a harrowing 47 days in a raft before he’s caught by the Japanese and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. No reservations necessary! The Friends of Portland Library supports the Library’s DVD collection.
Art Exhibit by Paula Slym and Amanda Rasch: 
Paula J. Slym, Coyote Run Art: Paula specializes in acrylic painting, but she also enjoys watercolor.
Self-taught, Paula’s work is unfettered by the structure of a professional artist; she paints with emotion,
focusing on unique landscapes or majestic animals, and this is evident in each of her unique pieces. Paula’s pieces are part of many local collections. This is her second show at the library and her first show with her daughter, Amanda Rasch. Their art is available for purchase unless otherwise noted. Come to Paula and Amanda’s Artist Reception on Saturday, June 6th, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Hosted by the Friends of the Portland Library!
Tuesday June 30th: Getting the job you want - for recent graduates and other employment seekers:
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the Mary Flood Room: Mike Fazio, WORKFORCE180, Founder/CEO, will share all there is to know about finding the job you want. Whether, you’re still in school, graduated, or just in the market for something new, this workshop is a great option!! Webinars are free to access and always recorded to also be replayed anytime.
