2015 Adult Summer Reading Program

This summer’s challenge was to “Escape the Ordinary” by exploring heroes, superheroes, and extraordinary people, places, and activities. It offered adults the opportunity to have fun, explore new interests, and to interact with other adults.
Summer Reading Club
Fifty-six adults registered for the reading club and logged in 108,935 pages and 129 reviews. This was the highest participation of adults in the summer reading club to date.
2015 Adult Summer Reading Activities
During the summer, we showed 6 movies, had 3 book discussions, 3 Lunch and Learn activities, and 3 special programs. We finished the season with an all ages Flash Read and Ice Cream Social on the Portland Town Green.

Family Day on the Green

Family Day is an annual event organized by the Town of Portland Youth Services Department. Many groups have booths and offer free items as well as sales of food and other items. Come enjoy the fun activities for kids!

Friends of the Portland Library and the Portland Historical Society present Carl Oscar Hedstrom and The Indian Motorcycle by George Gilbert. Carl Oscar Hedstrom, a prominent Portland resident, built and raced bicycles, creating the original motorized bicycles that led to the Indian Motorcycle.
Presenter and society member, George Gilbert has developed an extensive knowledge of Hedstrom’s work. All are invited to attend Gilbert’s interesting talk illustrated by many historical photos.

Jen LaFave, Club Manager of Snap Fitness Portland, will lead a discussion focused on finding the right routine for you, how to stay motivated, finding the right exercises and making sure they are being done correctly. Form is crucial! Learn how often you should be exercising and when to do strength training and cardio work. She will demonstrate some very effective exercises and handout some exercise guides along with a weekly exercise tracker. All fitness levels are welcome.
Jen is a certified personal trainer through the
National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Art Exhibit by Brownstone Artists
Brownstone Arts returns to the Library with its annual fall exhibit. Their show this year is titled “Elsewhere,” The show opens with a Reception on Saturday September 19th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. which is hosted by the Friends of the Library. Based in Portland, Brownstone Arts consists of members from towns up and down the Connecticut River Valley. The artists work in a variety of mediums. New members are welcome.
