Alleged Bar Shooter Turns Himself In, Held On $500K Bond: Police

Alberto Martinez, 27, of New Haven, is accused by police of being one of two men involved in a late night bar parking lot shootout.

EAST HAVEN, CT —The person police say is seen on a bar's surveillance video in a late-night parking lot shootout turned himself in to authorities Thursday.

According to East Haven Police Department Capt. Joseph M. Murgo, Alberto Martinez, 27, of New Haven, was charged with multiple offenses and is being held on a court ordered $500,000 bond.

According to Murgo, and as seen in the below video, on Oct. 10, in the rear parking lot of Rumba’s Bar and Café in East Haven, two men, one allegedly Martinez, had a "dispute" inside the bar, then brought it outside where "gunfire was exchanged." No one was injured or struck by gunfire.

As seen in the video and according to police, Martinez is arguing with the other man who "appears to brandish two firearms." That man, who has not yet been identified, pointed a gun in Martinez’s direction, before walking away. Then, Martinez is seen entering a dark sedan briefly, before exiting the vehicle with his own firearm, Murgo said. The other man then fires "multiple rounds into the air," police said. Martinez is then captured on video pointing his gun the direction of the other man before "firing off multiple rounds across the parking lot, sending the gathering crowd scattering for cover," Murgo said. The unidentified second shooter can be seen on surveillance video taking cover behind a white van while returning fire in Martinez’s direction, police said. Multiple cars, some with people in them, were struck by gunfire.

Murgo said investigators are still trying to identify the second suspect described as Hispanic, believed to be in his 20s wearing a red hat, black t-shirt and dark-colored jeans.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of this suspect is urged to contact Detective Joseph Carangelo at jcarangelo@easthavenpolice.com, Murgo said.
