EAST HAVEN, CT — Four arrests have been made in connection with a large disturbance involving a fight between patrons and an assault on police that occurred on April 12 in the rear parking lot of Rumba’s Bar, 679 Main Street, police said.
At 2:04 a.m., officers assigned to a proactive crime suppression detail were in the area of Rumbas Bar due to a large crowd gathering, police said.
While officers were monitoring the crowd as patrons were leaving, they saw several men arguing in the rear parking lot, police said.
As officers approached, four individuals began actively fighting with each other and ignored repeated commands to stop, police said.
During the altercation, one individual broke away from the fight and turned his attention toward an officer attempting to restore order, striking the officer multiple times in the face, police said.
The officer was taken to the ground, where the assault continued, police said.
Officers deployed pepper spray to bring the altercation to an end. Multiple people, including the officer who was assaulted, were treated by East Haven Fire Department medics, officials said.
"The investigation revealed that a physical altercation began in the rear parking lot as two separate groups of bar patrons were getting in their vehicles to leave for the night," police said.
All four participants in the altercation were taken into custody and transported to the East Haven Police Department for processing.
They have been identified as Brian Alvarado-Santos, 31, of New Haven, charged with assault on police/public safety, third-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace, and interfering with an officer.
