NEW HAVEN, CT — Just after 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, cops were called to the area of Mead Street and Judson Avenue for a ShotSpotter activation.

Dispatchers then began receiving 911 calls of a male shot in the backyard of an address on Judson Avenue, police said.

When officers arrived, they found a 21-year-old male victim lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound, police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart said.

The man was transported via ambulance to the main campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his injuries were determined to be critical and life-threatening, Bruckhart said.

"Within a few minutes of the initial call," a walk-in gunshot victim arrived at the Ork Street campus emergency department. The victim, a 24-year-old from East Haven, was determined to have non-life-threatening injuries stemming from the same incident, police said.

"The initial investigation indicates that this was not a random event, and investigators are working to establish a connection between the people involved," Bruckhart said.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have valuable information to investigators to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department's anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
