EAST HAVEN, CT — A 5-year-old child was struck by a car and killed Thursday afternoon on Foxon Road, East Haven police said.

"Today, our community experienced a heartbreaking loss following a motor vehicle accident involving a young child," East Haven police Captain Joseph M. Murgo said.

It was 3:21 p.m. when the police and fire department responded to the area of Foxon and Bennett roads for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian, Murgo said.

First responders found a 5-year-old child who had been struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection, he said. "Despite lifesaving efforts, both on scene and at Yale New Haven Hospital, the child tragically passed away due to their injuries," Murgo said.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene.

The South-Central Connecticut Traffic Unit responded and has taken over the investigation, police noted.

Foxon Road between Hunt Lane and North High Street will remain closed while the SCCTU conducts its investigation.

"We have been in contact with administrators at East Haven Public Schools, who have been made aware of this incident and are prepared to provide support to students and staff who may be impacted by this loss," Murgo said.

"The East Haven Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the child during this incredibly difficult time," he added.

This remains an active investigation, and additional information will be released when appropriate, police said.

"We ask that the privacy of the family be respected as they grieve this unimaginable loss," police said.

East Haven Fire Department Chief Matt Marcarelli told Patch that there were "multiple crews" at the Foxon Fire Station training when they "heard screaming through the window." At the same time, he said, firefighters were alerted by construction workers about the accident.

"They radioed in, 'pedestrian struck,' and immediately went to work," Marcarelli said.

"One of our paramedics rode in with the AMR (ambulance) crew, so the child had a whole team of paramedics working to save his life, and they were by his side in seconds after the accident."
