EAST HAVEN, CT—In the wake of the sudden and devastating death of a 5-year-old East Haven child, his family, friends, and an entire community are mourning.
Struck by a vehicle on Foxon Road directly across from the fire station Thursday afternoon, the boy died despite Herculean efforts by East Haven's firefighter-paramedics to save his young life.
The operator off the vehicle that struck the boy remained on the scene. The accident is under investigation by East Haven police and the South-Central Connecticut Traffic Unit.
East Haven Mayor Joseph A. Carfora released this statement Friday afternoon:
"Our community is heartbroken by the tragic loss of a young child last night.
There are simply no words that can adequately express the sorrow felt when a life so young is lost. As a father and grandfather, I cannot even imagine the heartbreak. My heart and my prayers are with this child's family and loved ones as they face an unimaginable loss.
Today, we all mourn together. I ask that we surround this family with compassion, love, and prayer, and that we also respect their privacy as they grieve.
On behalf of the entire Town of East Haven, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family. May they find strength in the love and support surrounding them during this incredibly difficult time.
