EAST HAVEN, CT—The 5-year-old child struck by a car and killed Thursday afternoon on Foxon Road has been identified by East Haven police.
"It is with deep sorrow that we provide the following update regarding the fatal accident that occurred yesterday on Foxon Road," East Haven police Capt. Joseph M. Murgo said.
"The young child who tragically lost his life in yesterday's motor vehicle accident has been identified as 5-year-old Cooper Villano of East Haven," Murgo said. "Our thoughts remain with Cooper's family, loved ones, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by him during this incredibly difficult time."
It was 3:21 p.m. when the police and fire department responded to the area of Foxon and Bennett roads for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian, Murgo said Thursday.
"Despite lifesaving efforts, both on scene and at Yale New Haven Hospital, the child tragically passed away due to their injuries," Murgo said at the time.
The driver of the vehicle remained on scene, and the South-Central Connecticut Traffic Unit took over the investigation.
Police contacted East Haven Public Schools administrators, who were "prepared to provide support to students and staff who may be impacted by this loss."
Patch reached out to schools; Superintendent Adam Swinney for comment.
"We ask that Cooper's family be given the privacy and compassion they deserve as they grieve this unimaginable loss," the police captain said Friday. "The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under active investigation, and additional information will be shared when appropriate."
