Safe disposal of these medications ensure they do not end up in the wrong hands or in our water supply, police noted.

"The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat," the DEA notes on its National Prescription Drug Take Back Day website.

The effort is part of the "DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting and is committed to making our communities safer and healthier, and we can do this by reducing overdoses and overdose deaths."

In the April collection nationally, more than 4,4oo law enforcement agencies took part with more than 5,000 collection sites. In that event, according to the DEA, 360 tons of medications were collected.
