UPDATE: After Alert, Lockdown, Barricaded Person Now In Custody
After an alert to residents to avoid Stevens Street area, a school lockdown, and SWAT activated, the barricaded suspect is in custody.
EAST HAVEN, CT — Tuesday afternoon, police shuttered streets, an emergency shelter in place alert was sent, and Momauguin School was locked down as police negotiated with a person who had barricaded themselves in a Stevens Street location, police said.
At around 1 p.m., East Haven police first posted to social media asking residents to avoid the area between Austin and Soundview avenues. An alert from the town also included a shelter in place for the areas of North Atwater, Henry and George streets. "Please remain in your homes and avoid the area due to police activity," the alert read.
East Haven police Capt. Joseph M. Murgo told Patch at around 2 p.m., that Momauguin School was in lockdown and East Haven High School and James Melillo Middle School were alerted "with regards to bus routes and stops in the area."

Murgo said the incident began when he East Haven Public Safety Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a woman reporting a domestic incident on Stevens Street. She said her husband, who fled the house and ran into a detached garage, was intoxicated and in possession of a hatchet, Murgo said.
Police arrived and "set up a perimeter." Police tried to talk to the man repeatedly, "who continuously pointed a hand gun at officers while coming to the doorway of the garage," Murgo said.
Police continued to try to establish communication with the man, "while a less lethal plan was developed," Murgo said.
Murgo said the man was safely taken into custody "through the use of less lethal means."
The gun in the man's possession is believed to have been a BB gun, he said.
The man, who had minor injuries, was treated on scene by East Haven Fire Department personnel before being transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for evaluation.
Murgo said Austin and Soundview avenues will remain closed until the investigation is complete though local traffic will be let through.
"The scene is secure and there is no danger to the public at this time," he said.
