At Hagaman Memorial Library, our Reference Librarian has been working around-the-clock to provide our community with fun, free, engaging, educational, and inspirational activities in celebration of America250. In keeping with this goal, we're going all-out to celebrate Connecticut's State Hero, Nathan Hale!
Nathan Hale (1755–1776) was an American schoolteacher and captain in the Continental Army who became Connecticut's official state hero in 1985. In September 1776, he volunteered for a dangerous intelligence-gathering mission behind enemy lines in New York to report on British troop movements for General George Washington. Captured by the British shortly after, the 21-year-old was hanged as a spy without a trial, cementing his place in American history with his legendary final words: “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
