East Haven BOE Blesses Juneteenth As School Holiday

Juneteenth, short for June 19th, is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

EAST HAVEN, CT — At its most recent virtual meeting, the East Haven Board of Education voted to approve board chair Michele DeLucia's proposal to add Juneteenth to the district's list of holidays.

As part of "new business," including the 2020-2021 school district calendar, the vote was not unanimous, rather a 6 to 1 vote with member Thomas Hennessey voting against.

Juneteenth, short for June 19th, is a 155-year-old holiday that celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the United States.
