EAST HAVEN, CT — Every day, first responders do their work and, almost always, without fanfare, attention or public praise. Firefighters and medics don't do the job for pats on the back. They do it to help people and save lives.

But recently, a resident who, it turned out, was suffering a stroke, was comforted by East Haven Firefighter Medic Matt Drozd and so much so, she reached out to East Haven Fire Chief Matt Marcarelli. In a letter, she shared that all first responders were great, but Drozd "was very efficient as to what was happening to me."

"He came in the ambulance and explained every step of the way what was happening to me. He kept me very calm. As it happened, I was having a stroke. I am so grateful to him for his attention. Please extend my thanks to him again. You are very lucky to have someone like that on your department."
