East Haven Looking to Close 5 Schools

There will be three elementary schools left if the superintendent's proposal is approved.

East Haven Superintendent of Schools Portia Bonner said she knows she may face some criticism for her proposal to consolidate 10 existing schools down to 5 but she feels it’s in the best interest of the school system, the New Haven Register reports.

Bonner’s proposal still needs approval by several boards and commissions, there is no estimated price tag for the work as of yet, but it’s expected to be significant and the bottom line if her plan is approved there will be just three elementary schools left.

Here is the plan in a nutshell as outlined by the New Haven Register.

  1. Renovate Deer Run Elementary School for Pre-K through fourth-grade.
  2. Close Ferrera Elementary School when Dee Run is renovated.
  3. Renovate the Middle School, move the eighth grade to the High School.
  4. Momauquin Elementary School would be renovated, and then DC Moore Elementary would close.
  5. There would be one new building for Overbrook Elementary School.
  6. At the end of this long process, there would be three elementary schools and they each would offer a theme. The idea is to keep more students at home. East Haven loses approximately 150 students a year to magnet schools.

Bonner said the changes will be in the best interest of students. The school board will discuss the plan at its Tuesday meeting.
