East Haven Man Charged in Rash of Car Break-Ins in Madison

Madison police say at least eight cars were broken into.

Madison police say Zachary Scott Behler, 21, of Oregon Avenue in East Haven, is accused of breaking into several cars in Madison, police said in a press release Monday.

Police said on Sunday members of the Madison Police Department Patrol Division arrested Behler. Behler was arrested after a homeowner observed Behler attempting to enter a vehicle in the homeowner’s driveway in the Neck Road area of Madison, police said.

The homeowner called the Madison Police Department and officers were able to locate Behler as he arrived at his own vehicle parked in the area, police said.

Behler was found with various items from the vehicles he entered in his possession, police said. Behler provided Madison Police Officers with a statement indicating all of the vehicles he entered and the property he had taken, police said.

Behler was charged with eight counts of third-degree burglary and eight counts of sixth-degree larceny.

Behler was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court, New Haven on Dec. 23.

The Madison Police Department would like to remind residents to report suspicious behavior. If not for an observant homeowner, this individual may have gotten away, police said.
