East Haven Man Who Assaulted Mother is Sentenced

EAST HAVEN — East Haven resident Ryan Champlin, 34, was sentenced to 60 days in jail by New Haven Superior Court Judge Shari Murphy following his arrest on January 23 for domestic abuse, the New Haven Register has reported. Police apprehended Champlin in the Old Stone Church at 251 Main Street, following a tip.

The church's former pastor, Rev. Care Goodstal Spinks, attempted to block the arrest on the grounds that the church was a sanctuary. Following the release of video from the police and an outcry from parishioners on Facebook, church officials announced that Spinks was no longer affiliated with the congregation.

The New Haven Register has reported that in exchange for pleading guilty to third-degree assault, interfering with an emergency call and disorderly conduct, Champlin had his charges reduced. He was sentenced to a year in jail, suspended after serving 30 days, for each charge. He will serve two years of probation after his incarceration.
