The Northeast Organic Farm Association’s Organic Land Care Program will be hosting a free workshop for homeowners interested in learning more about organic land care. The workshop, titled “Green Up Your Yard with Organic Land and Lawn Care: Save Money and the Environment” will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the Hagaman Memorial Library, 227 Main Street, East Haven.
This workshop provides information on the ecological and economic benefits of organic land care as well as the tools and resources needed to go organic at home. The workshop will conclude with a thirty minute question and answer period. The awareness of the ecological and health threats that synthetic pesticides and fertilizers pose to biodiversity, water quality and ecosystem health along with the rising costs of petroleum based landscape products make the lessons taught in “Green Up Your Yard with Organic Land and Lawn Care” especially pertinent. Participants will receive a handout of resources and a guide to finding local accredited organic land care professionals. The workshop will be taught by Kathleen Connolly, a NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care professional and Advanced Master Gardener.
The NOFA OLC was founded in 1999 to extend the vision and principles of organic agriculture to the landscapes where people spend their daily lives. The OLC organizes a five-day course to train and accredit organic land care professionals and has established an online directory of accredited landscapers. The OLC also offers advanced hands-on, in-depth workshops and releases educational publications like the Introduction to Organic Lawns and Yards and the yearly Guide to Organic Land Care.
