ID Released in Fatal East Haven Accident: UPDATE

East Haven police are still searching for the likely driver of the vehicle involved in the crash. That individual fled the area, police said

EAST HAVEN, CT — Police say the victim in Wednesday's fatal motor vehicle accident is Gaitana Girgenti, 27.

Three people were inside a vehicle that crashed around noon in the area of The Home Depot on Frontage Road in East Haven Wednesday.

Lt. Joseph M. Murgo said in an email Thursday that police believe the image of the person (see above) is the person who was behind the wheel of the car involved in Wednesday's fatal accident.

He said police are still searching for the man pictured above. The fatal accident involved one vehicle. A second person inside the vehicle also suffered serious injuries. Girgenti died as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident, police said.

The third occupant who fled the accident scene on foot is described as a black male in his late teens, early 20’s wearing black shorts with a blue stripe and blue sneakers, police said. He was last seen in the wooded area between Dunkin Donuts, 91 Frontage Road and CarMax, police said Wednesday.

The accident shut down a portion of Route 1 for hours Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the third occupant is asked to call the East Haven Police Department at 203-468-3820.
