Just as almost everyone figured Mayor Joseph Maturo settled the case with Francine Carbone. The winner by TKO was Carbone.
- $175,000 payment to Carbone
- Lifetime full medical for Carbone and her husband.
- Carbone’s lawyer’s fee paid in full.
So digging into the numbers and guessing at best the salary for Carbone is approximately $35K per year she made back her lost three years of salary plus another year and a half. Additionally, Town benefits per person are approximately $25K per year times two is $50k. If Carbone who is in her late 50’s along with her husband lives another 35 years that equates to 1.75 million dollars in coverage. It is unknown how much her lawyer fees truly are but a safe bet would be in the neighborhood of $75K to $100K. So the grand approximate total for an innocent Joseph Maturo is 2.02 million dollars! One figure we will never know is how much did 3 lawyers from the Town of East Haven cost? I would safely guess in the same neighborhood. Hundreds of thousands of dollars spend prosecuting and defending the indefensible! The true winners are all the attorneys!
The next question is who is going to pay for this disaster and what about Maturo’s job? First and foremost this was Joe Maturo’s doing and he should be on the hook for every penny. He owes the taxpayers of the Town of East Haven an apology for his behavior that led us to this point and lastly he should be fired just like any other CEO would be.

Even though Maturo will claim no fault or guilt the mere fact that he has settled this case points to the fact that he had a lot to hide. Although we wish that Carbone could have gone all the way with this trial we understand that she is the real victim here and has every right to protect herself and her family. Many voices were silenced today and there still is the atmosphere that exists in this town where people are getting away with it. Our only hope is that the East Haven Town Council and Board of Finance hold Maturo’s hands to the fire and demand that he be held 100% accountable for his decision to settle. After all he has been quoted saying, “the lawsuit is frivolous and without merit and that he will be vindicated in court.” Was that before or after the Town just settled a lawsuit in excess of two million dollars. What a joke!
