After moving to West Haven, he opened Castle Hill Canine Services. His failing health forced him to retire in 2018 but he never lost his passion for dogs. Some of his happiest times were breeding his Havanese dogs and watching the puppies being born. He loved his home and enjoyed just hanging out with his dogs and his wife and best friend, Sandra, who he was married to for the past 28 years.

Dan is survived by two brothers, Jack (Bonnie), Steve (Maria), both of East Haven, and a sister, Ellen (Greg) Nelson, of North Carolina.
