Obituary: Donald L. MacKinnel 91, of Branford formerly East Haven

A family man who grew up in East Haven, he joined the Marine Corps, later settled in Branford and worked for UI for 45 years.

Donald L. MacKinnel of Branford died Friday December 24, 2021 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the beloved husband for 63 years of the late Phoebe Klein MacKinnel, his high school sweetheart and love of his life.

Donald was born April 10, 1930 in New Haven a son of the late James and Ebba Lund MacKinnel and grew up in East Haven. He played basketball and baseball in high school. After high school, he joined the USMC. After his service in the Marine Corps, he settled in Branford and went to work for the UI Company, where he worked for 45 years until retirement.

Don is survived by his sons, Douglas (Sharon) MacKinnel, David (Anne) MacKinnel and Daniel (Didi) MacKinnel, all of Branford; his grandchildren, Kyle, Abby, Taylor, Tiffany, and Tommy; and his great-grandkids, Kaden and Summer. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother James MacKinnel and his sister Joan Bowden.

Don loved his family, his friends, his home, his dogs, and watching UConn women’s basketball. His family would like to give a special thanks to his caregiver, Audrey Griffin who took great care of him these past two years, and his nurses at YNHH, Stephanie, Alex, Gabbi and Joe, and they would also like to thank his friends and neighbors, Norma, Dotti, Sara and Doreen for their friendship and concern shown to him during his last years at home.

Funeral services are private at the convenience of his family.
