Obituary: James Sommo, 89, of East Haven

A Korean War veteran, he worked 40-plus years for Rockbestos Company, and in retirement, he was an usher for Yale University Athletics.

James Sommo, 89, of East Haven passed away March 29, 2022 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born September 23, 1932 in East Haven to James Sr. and Hazel (Dunlap) Sommo. James is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy Sommo and four children, Dorothy Ann Green (Anthony) of Missouri, James Sommo III of Wallingford, Michael Sommo (Laurie) of East Haven and Christopher Sommo (Ann Marie) of Waterbury along with three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous nieces/nephews. He is also survived by his siblings, Francis Sommo, Lawrence Sommo (Corrine), Mary Ann Speers, Teresa Sacco (Frank), Marguerite Dudek and Janet Schupp (Kevin).

James is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Anthony Sommo and a sister, Dolores Kyle.

Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed by the Rockbestos Company both in New Haven and East Granby for 40 plus years. While working there, he played softball, bowling and golf in the New Haven Industrial League under their sponsorship.

After “retirement” he went to work as an usher for Yale University Athletics as an usher. He mostly worked their football, men’s basketball and hockey games. Jim really enjoyed doing this because of the many friends he made there.

Jim was also a former member of Sleeping Giant Men’s Club and Bobby’s Gang also at Sleeping Giant. During his golfing days, he had made three Hole in One scores.

The family has asked that you consider donating to a Veteran’s organization or charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, April 3, 2022 from 2 to 5 P.M. at the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 4 at 11 A.M. in St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 80 Taylor Ave., East Haven and Committal and US Army Military Honors at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven.
