Larry was born on May 12, 1942 in New Haven, Connecticut, to parents Edward "Ray" McCann and Dorothy "Dot" Phelon McCann. His early childhood was spent in the Saltonstall area of East Haven, which at that time was still mostly open fields and farmland. When he was 10 years old, the family relocated to a house on Townsend Avenue in Morris Cove, where his parents spent all of their remaining years. Larry graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in 1960 and then immediately joined the U.S. Air Force where he trained as a medic and ambulance driver. After leaving the service, he utilized his driver training by transporting gasoline for Esso (later Exxon) and Standard Oil in the Greater New Haven area and nation wide.
