Ruth (Smithson) Alves, 97 of East Haven passed away September 13, 2025 in Florida. She was born June 1, 1928 in New Bedford, MA to Leonard and Marion (Grimshaw) Smithson. Ruth is survived by her two sons; John Alves (Julia) of Florida and Robert Alves (Patricia) of Florida and five grandchildren; Jeana Closinski (Douglas), John Alves (Kristen), Joanna Fairs (James), Brian Alves and Kevin Alves. She is also survived by her four great grandchildren; Sydney Closinski, Ryan Alves, Avery Fairs and William Fairs.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Alves (2014) and a sister, Marion Woods.
Ruth was a strong woman who lived a full and meaningful life. She had a long career supporting the Divisional Superintendent at Pratt & Whitney. She loved to travel especially to Aruba with her sons and daughters-in-law. Ruth and Bob (who also worked for P&W) went on many cruises and other trips with co-workers. Once retired, they spent their summers in East Haven and Mattapoisett, MA and wintered as snowbirds in Clearwater, Florida. Ruth was an avid reader, loved her daily walks and spending time with her family. She completed many Breast Cancer Walks and volunteered for them as well. Ruth found great joy in her visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very proud of them all. In 2016, Ruth moved to Florida where her son John and his wife Julie provided her with loving care and unwavering support throughout her years. They enjoyed all their visits together. Ruth loved the community where she lived, continued to be a jokester and especially enjoyed sitting outside in the sun.
