EAST HAVEN, CT — Workers have begun the process of restoring the Old Stone Church steeple, a project in the making for nearly two years.

Following the years-long fundraising campaign, contractor Valley Restoration of Litchfield will be using 40-foot lift to attach block and tackle to hold workers as they scrape and paint and restore the steeple, church Pastor Mark Pilletere said.

The work will entail an inspection of the steeple for any damage that may have occurred over the years, and repair as needed, he said. Workers will also be inspecting and repairing any and all joints and install critter screening. How long it will take is dependent on weather, Pilletere said, and would include "drying time between two coats of primer and the final coat."

Pilletere said the work will not interfere with any activities of the church, as it's being done on the front side of the original building.
