Two East Haven Firefighter/Paramedics Honored by Yale New Haven Hospital Center for EMS

EAST HAVEN, CT—The Yale New Haven Hospital Center for EMS awarded one of East Haven's bravest the Paramedic of the Year honor in ceremonies May 15.

According to YNHH-CEMS, each year, peers nominate individuals who exemplify excellence in emergency medical services.

This year that person is East Haven firefighter/paramedic Joseph Benzi.

Also as part of its annual ceremony, EMS "providers whose rapid actions, clinical excellence, and teamwork" are behind cardiac arrest saves were honored. At the ceremony, 42 cardiac arrest survivors from 2025 were recognized, with 10 survivors attending and meeting the EMS professionals who saved their lives.

Another East Haven firefighter was recognized for saving the life of a patient in cardiac arrest: Firefighter / Paramedic Chris Hughes received a Unit Citation for a cardiac arrest save.

In a socal media post, East Haven Fire Department Chief Matt Marcarelli shared the news that "two of East Haven’s bravest" were recognized today by YNHH CEMS.

"Excellent work by both," Marcarelli said. "The department is lucky to have you both! Keep up the good work."

As a fitting tribute to kick off EMS Week, YNHH CEMS thanked all EMS providers, dispatchers, educators, and first responders for the "sacrifices you make each day in service to others."
