WATCH: Man Carrying Knives Asks Cops to Kill Him, They Don't
East Haven Police release dramatic video showing how officers used their training which led to no one getting hurt.

EAST HAVEN, CT — A suicidal man carrying knives walked toward East Haven Police officers urging they "kill" him. In the video released by the Police Department, you can see an officer put down his gun and deploy a Taser, which allowed officers to take the man into custody, and most importantly no one was injured. (See the entire video below).
It all began at 4:27 a.m. on Tuesday when police were called to 65 Messina Drive for an individual threatening people while in possession of several large knives, police said. Police found the man in a 7th floor hallway. The individual was in possession of a knife in each hand and approached the officers demanding that they kill him (Suicide by Cop), police said.
Each officer can be seen with their department issued gun unholstered, but as the individual got up and approached Officers David Delgado and William Coppola, Delgado made the decision to holster his firearm and deploy his Taser, which immediately incapacitated the individual, giving the officers an opportunity to move in and secure the knives, Police Lt. Joseph Murgo said.

Once the knives were secure, Delgado and Coppola were able to disarm and apprehend the individual without further incident, police said.
Murgo explains the significance of "de-escalation training."

"This incident highlights the importance of three relatively new concepts in law enforcement. All of which were demonstrated in this video. First off, there has never been more of a need for de-escalation training than there is now in today’s society.
Remaining calm when faced with a life or death situation is no easy task, but is something that can be learned with proper training. Next is Less Lethal technology. Officer Delgado and Officer Coppola encountered an individual who potentially posed a grave danger to them and to other people in the building.
With this in mind, this incident could have been a deadly force encounter, but with the option of a Taser available, fortunately it played out much differently. Lastly, and as we have spoken about in the past, the use of Body Worn Cameras have been of great benefit to us in the field.
The use of body cameras gives us an opportunity to document what is taking place as it happens and also provides a valuable training tool for the younger generation of officers who are still developing their strategy and technique.
Since the inception of our body camera program, which began in June of 2014, we have compiled a large amount of footage from our own officers that we periodically use as training videos. These videos are so important to us because it shows the absolute reality of our job and the raw emotions that go along with it.
We hope this video provides some insight into what types of scenarios police officers encounter on a daily basis," Murgo concludes in his statement.
