SOMERS, CT — The Somers community is rallying around a local family after a fire destroyed their home and left them facing the difficult task of starting over.

The Mitchell family of Somers recently lost their home and nearly all of their belongings in a devastating fire on Maple Street, according to Somers Human Services.

Somers Human Services said donations are being collected through the Town Emergency Fund. Checks can be made out to “Town Emergency Fund/Mitchell Family” and dropped off or mailed to 619 Main St., Somers.

The family lost “all but the clothes on their backs” in the fire and is now working to rebuild their lives, according to a flyer shared online.

The Somers Fire Department said firefighters were called to Maple Street early Thursday morning for a second-alarm structure fire. In a post at 4:34 a.m., the department said crews were at the scene and asked people to avoid the area.

The fire was reported at a two-story wood-frame home. Crews from several surrounding departments were called to help, including departments from Hazardville, Shaker Pines, Enfield, West Stafford, Stafford and Broad Brook.

Officials later said a family of three was displaced by the fire. One resident was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, and a firefighter was also taken for evaluation before being released.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

The donation effort is being promoted under the message “Somers Community Strong,” with residents encouraged to help support the family during a challenging time.
