ELLINGTON, CT — Ellington voters will return to the polls Tuesday to decide a revised town budget proposal after the first spending plan failed at referendum.
Referendum No. 2 for the Town of Ellington budget will be held from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the Ellington Senior Center, 40 Maple St., according to a reminder posted by the Ellington Board of Education.
The second referendum follows a special Board of Finance meeting held May 28, when officials discussed revisions to the proposed budget.
By the end of that meeting, the Board of Finance made adjustments to revenues and reductions to expenditures that resulted in a net change of about $1.5 million, according to the town. If adopted, the anticipated mill rate would be 25.65.
The revised budget recommended for the 2026-27 fiscal year totals $76,246,819, according to the Board of Finance deliberation document. That includes $25,087,021 for general government, $1,960,290 for capital outlay and $49,199,508 for the Board of Education.
The capital outlay revisions include reductions or removals for several projects, including Town Hall renovation/addition funding, library updates, Board of Education A/V upgrades, police interceptor SUVs and an Ellington Volunteer Fire Department light rescue truck, according to the document.
The first budget proposal failed at referendum with a preliminary count of 1,049 votes against and 891 votes in favor, according to the town.
Polls will be open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ellington Senior Center.
