SOMERS, CT — Organizers of the Somers Annual Scarecrow Festival are looking for volunteers to haul supplies, decorate the fairgrounds and help run activities ahead of the Saturday, Oct. 24 event.
The festival will take place at the Four Town Fairgrounds, 56 Egypt Road.
"VOLUNTEERS! VOLUNTEERS! VOLUNTEERS! We need people!" organizers wrote in a Monday appeal.
One need is drivers with trucks who can transport pumpkins, cornstalks and storage bins from locations around Somers to the fairgrounds. Organizers will coordinate those trips in the weeks before the festival.
On Friday, Oct. 23, volunteers can help from 1 to 3 p.m., 3 to 6 p.m., or the full 1-to-6 p.m. stretch. Jobs include lifting pumpkins, mums and cornstalks, arranging tables and putting up decorations.
Another setup shift runs Saturday, Oct. 24, from 7 to 10 a.m. Volunteers will help decorate and direct people arriving with pumpkin and scarecrow entries, along with craft vendors.
Volunteers helping during the festival can choose 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 4 p.m., or the full 9:30 a.m.-to-4 p.m. shift.
Assignments include selling game tickets, helping in the haunted house area, assisting with the scavenger hunt and filling other posts as needed.
To volunteer for setup, help transport supplies or discuss contributions, email scarecrowfestivalsomers@gmail.com. Festival-day volunteers can register through the organizers' SignUpGenius page.
"We look forward to this amazing festival and are excited to once again work together to serve our community!" organizers wrote.
The festival website also lists free scarecrow and pumpkin contests, plus a children's costume contest at noon on the main stage.
