Area Residents Mistake Chicken Poop for Propane in Several Ellington 911 Calls
Town officials clarified the pungent odor in an alert message.

ELLINGTON, CT — Several 911 calls about a propane-like odor near Frog Hollow Road prompted town officials to declare the smell in question is chicken poop.
"The odor experienced on Frog Hollow Road that smells like propane is chicken manure used by a farmer ... Just Ellington being Ellington," First Selectman Lori Spielman said.
Town officials sent out an alert Wednesday clarifying the odor.

She said farmers like the manure when available because of a high nitrogen content.
In defense of the callers, she said, "Well, we do have large propane tanks on Frog Hollow."

Spielman said heavy air under humid conditions keeps the smell from rising.
