Somers Dept. of Veterans Services Distributes Donated Winter Jackets from Ocean State Job Lot

ATTENTION: ALL SOMERS MILITARY VETERANS!!

THIS IS A TOWN OF SOMERS EVENT!

Somers Department of Veterans Services distributed FREE, WARM, quality winter jackets (and some cute Christmas collectible figurines) to Somers veterans Saturday, 12/21/2019, 2PM-5PM . The free jackets and figurines will be distributed again on Sunday, 12/22/2019 10AM-6PM at the Somers Town Hall Auditorium. Please encourage all military veterans to stop by and receive their jacket.

If you know of a Somers veteran who is ill or not able to pick up their jacket in person due to health reasons, a family member must bring one of the eligibility documents to pick up a jacket on their behalf.

All military veterans must show one eligible document to receive a jacket: Eligible documents to verify Military Veteran status include: - Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) - Veterans ID Card - CT Drivers License or CT state ID Card that has a veterans designation (US Flag) - DD-214 - VA Proof-of-Service Letter, issued by the Department of Veteran's Affairs - American Legion (Legionnaire) Membership Card Only One of these documents is required for verification.

The Easter Seals Capital Region and Eastern Connecticut and Veteran’s Rally Point partnered with Ocean State Job Lot (donated all the jackets), Military Support Foundation Inc. and USA Veterans to distribute 2,000 coats on Friday, December 20, 2019 at their facility in Norwich. Two-hundred coats donated by Ocean State Job Lot were provided to David McCaffrey, Director - Town of Somers, Department of Municipal Veterans Services, for distribution to Somers military veterans.

“This was such a great act of kindness and appreciation for our veterans,” said McCaffrey. “Many of our Somers veterans are just too humble to ask for any type of help, so we have been getting the word out from veteran to veteran, making it more personal so that our veterans will feel comfortable accepting this very necessary, cozy, warm and great-looking jacket! We have also been making it more personal by delivering some jackets to our ill or home-bound veterans. These jackets were such a great gift to donate and especially before Christmas when many veterans spend a lot on gifts for others and neglect their own needs.”

“We here in the town of Somers are very grateful for the donations and teamwork accomplished by these compassionate organizations,” said Somers veteran Sherri Marquis, Jr. Vice Commander, The American Legion, 4th District. “Thank you so much Ocean State Job Lot, Military Support Foundation Inc., Easter Seals Capital Region and Eastern Connecticut and Veteran’s Rally Point, USA Veterans, Mr. John Chan, and our Town of Somers Officials -- especially our awesome Dept. of Public Works -- for a memorable Christmas for many of our military veterans! Please call on us if we can ever do anything for YOU!"
