Beach at Crystal Lake Closed Again Friday

A beach at Crystal Lake was closed again after more water tests were performed, health district officials said.

ELLINGTON, CT — Sandy Beach remained closed Friday, based on the results of water tests performed at Crystal Lake Thursday, town officials said.

The town beach was also closed Thursday.

Officials from the North Central Health District said the recommendation was made because traces of coliform showed up in the water in tests earlier this week. It was just enough for the closure, officials said.

Stormwater runoff is a common reason why elevated levels of coliform show up in lake water, health district officials said. Storms earlier this week were the likely culprits, officials said.

The water is constantly being monitored and will be re-tested Friday, officials said.

The elevated bacteria levels seem to be confined to the south end of Crystal Lake, near Sandy Beach, health district officials said.

Water at the state boat launch and and at the inlet off Conklin Road tested OK, health district officials said.
