2026 Piedmont Photography Show

[This is not a review, but an invitation by a local Somers’s resident]

(By Dan Cassano May 14, 2026)

There is something for everyone at the Piedmont Photography show on Main Street in Somers, CT.  Flamingos, Dancing Bears, Ducks and a Friendly Fox are some of the subjects taken by the photographers.  Pull your head for a moment from your portable device and breath in a tranquil seaside, a lotus blossom, a farmhouse sunset, and a field of sunflowers not from Topeka, but from here in Enfield, CT.

These are just some of the human’s perspectives from your environment framed for you to experience, something taken from the real world that will stir your soul. According to Juror Frank Zaremba,  “ This gallery features a diverse collection of images demonstrating thoughtful use of lighting, composition, and color, along with impressive attention to detail.”

I was at the opening (Presented by the Somers Cultural Commission), and was astonished by the quantity of very good photographs.  Before I viewed the show, I picked up a program listing all of the photos to make a few notes, sometimes assigning stars (1-5).  Many of these photos are in the 3 to 5 star ranges!  I can’t imagine how you could judge this show with so many top shelf photos.

Though I am not a qualified critic, as a local resident of Somers, I’d like to share some of my notes and impressions:  The artist/photographers waited just for the right light to illuminate a barn or lighthouse.  Some have captured a moment that reflects the present times we are struggling in.  The photo “We Hold These Truths To Be…  by Arthur Backstrom shows a young Asian woman reading a document as her T shirt is reflecting the American Flag across her chest through a pane of glass.  Another woman is photographed in profile, standing stoically exercising her right to protest at a No Kings Rally.  Some of our local artists have traveled beyond the area:  from the back of a car repair shop to a striking mural in New Zealand or a rain shower in Algadon.  Feel free to re-enter the real world.  I challenge you to put down your device and embrace the love of life that is looking right back at you from another human being’s passion for the world we all share and live in.  Who knows you may even consider taking one of these treasured works home or to give as a gift to raise a smile.  (I was so inspired; I purchased a framed-photograph for my Mother’s upcoming 95th birthday.)

There’s a photo by Pat Bachetti entitled “ Because Whatever Life Takes You…” It sounds like a good way to start your journey… find out the rest by visiting the Photography exhibit which is completing its two week run this week:  May 14 -17 from 10AM to 2PM at Piedmont Hall on 604 Main Street.  Don’t forget to vote for your favorite photograph.  Artist Neil Connell will announce the People’s Choice Award on Sunday, May 17.
