Celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with an unforgettable day of living history!
It’s 1776. Battles are raging across Massachusetts, and Ellington’s militia stands ready to answer the Lexington Alarm. As our townsmen prepare to march, a company of British soldiers arrives in Ellington searching for deserters who may, or may not, be hiding among the good townspeople.
But the British have another mission: to find the legendary farmland of one of Boston’s most famous patriots, John Hancock. Yes, THAT John Hancock! Tempers flare. Loyalties are tested. Secrets are uncovered. And Ellington’s future may depend on what happens next. WILL YOU ANSWER THE CALL?T

ELLINGTON — A weathered inscription, a winged carving, or a willow tree etched in stone can reveal more than a name and date. On Saturday, October 17, the Ellington Historical Society and Perceived Paranormal will help visitors discover those details during “Tombstones Tell a Story” at the Nellie McKnight Museum, 70 Main Street.
Two sessions are offered at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Each combines an informational presentation on the history of tombstones with a cemetery walk highlighting interesting stones belonging to Ellington families from the Colonial era and early 1800s. Along the way, participants will learn the fascinating history of the people buried there and their connections to the town’s history.
Participants will explore how gravestone materials, artistry, inscriptions, and symbols changed over time—and what those changes reveal about the people who lived here. From Colonial winged death’s heads to the willow and urn designs that followed, these memorials offer glimpses into earlier beliefs, traditions, and community life.
“Tombstones Tell a Story” is an educational talk and walking tour guaranteed to intrigue. Tours will leave the Nellie McKnight Museum promptly on the hour. Light snacks and beverages will be available before and after each tour.
