College Milestones By Students From Ellington, Somers: Spring 2023

Here are some more notable feats and accomplishments achieved recently by college students hailing from Ellington and Somers.

ELLINGTON-SOMERS, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire. More great feats will be noted in the coming weeks.

Fairfield University, Fairfield CT

  • Owen Kinne of Somers graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fairfield University with a Masters from the School of Engineering on May 20. He is the son of Tracy and Kevin Kinne and grandson of Joyce Keating, all of Somers.

University of Scranton, Scranton PA

  • Erin R. Meaney of Ellington was among the more than 500 graduates who earned master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Scranton. Degrees were presented at its graduate commencement ceremony on May 21 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, Wilkes-Barre. Degrees were conferred to graduates who had completed their academic degree requirements in August and December of 2022, as well as January and May of 2023. Meaney earned a Master of Science in Nursing degree in family nurse practitioner.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • A total of 2,054 undergraduate students achieved the criteria required for WPI's spring 2023 Dean's List. The criteria for the WPI Dean's List differs from that of most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean's List by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects. Local honorees are Samantha Curtis of Ellington, class of 2024, majoring in psychological science; Lindsay Masamery of Somers, class of 2025, majoring in biomedical engineering; Trevor Parks of Somers, class of 2023, majoring in mechanical engineering; and Griffin St. Pierre of Ellington, class of 2026, majoring in biomedical engineering.
  • Trevor Parks of Somers, a member of the class of 2023 majoring in mechanical engineering at WPI, recently completed a senior thesis that is required of all graduating seniors as part of the university's distinctive project-based educational experience. The project, The Lobster R.O.L.: Resurfacing Oceanic Locator, was Trevor's Major Qualifying Project (MQP), one that is usually team-based and often focuses on very specific issues or needs of an organization that has partnered with the university to sponsor the student's work.
