Creek Area Where Ellington Girl Drowned Now Cleared

New York National Guard members were directed to clear waterway blockages last week in anticipation of Hurricane Joaquin.

Debris in a Catskill Mountain creek that contributed to the death of an Ellington teenager in a tubing accident last month has been removed, the Daily Freeman News reported.

Jordyn Engler, 14, was tubing with her father on the Esopus Creek in Shandaken, N.Y. on Sept. 5 when she became trapped in a strainer. She drowned before rescuers could reach her.

National Guard troops with excavating equipment entered the creek and removed the strainer Friday. They had been dispatched by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to clear all waterway blockages in anticipation of Hurricane Joaquin last week, the news site said.
