Ellington Community Unites For Earth Day Celebration
Clothing, Household Goods, Furniture, Bottles, Cans, and Food Scraps will be Collected to Reduce Waste and Promote Sustainability
This Saturday, April 20th, Ellington's Town Green and the historic Nellie McKnight Museum will be bustling hubs of activity as the community gathers for an Earth Day celebration unlike any other. In a spirited display of unity and commitment to environmental conservation, residents are invited to participate in a comprehensive collection drive, accepting donations of clothing, household items, furniture, bottles, cans, food scraps, and trash collected in neighborhoods.
The event promises to be a vibrant tapestry of eco-conscious initiatives and festive camaraderie; all centered around fostering sustainability and stewardship of our precious planet.

What to Bring:
- Trash collected in your neighborhood.
- Clothing: Clean your closets and donate gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories.
- Household Items and Furniture: Contribute good-conditioned household items and furniture to give new life to old treasures.
- Bottles and Cans: Recycle easily by bringing empty bottles and cans.
- Food Scraps: Join the composting revolution by donating food scraps to nourish the Earth and reduce waste.
How to Drop Off Items

- Drive into the drive-through driveway of the Nellie McKnight Museum, 70 Main St. to drop off trash collected in your neighborhood and bottles and cans.
- Continue through the driveway and take a left to drop off clothing and household goods in the Hartsprings truck and furniture in the Restore truck
- Three-compartment vessels will be scattered throughout the green to collect all trash, recyclable material, and food waste.
- Donors can receive a free ice cream at the Jimmy's stand at the Museum.
Additional Activities:
Over 75 participants plan a free, fun-filled day of entertainment, refreshments, games, activities, shopping, and learning opportunities. Multiple food vendors along Church St. will have many breakfast, lunch, and snack options.
The 2024 exhibit at the Nellie McKnight Museum, It Happened in Ellington…Believe It or Not, will be open during the Earth Day event. It features intriguing stories in Ellington’s history and famous people who once called Ellington their home. Visitors will be amazed and a bit surprised at the stories to be shared.
At the Nellie McKnight Museum, kids can unleash their creativity with rock painting, make pine cone bird feeders, get their faces painted, and have fun as bouncing pickles. All activities take place under the pavilion on the Museum grounds.
