Ellington Fire Department Names 2025 Firefighter Of The Year
Seven longtime members were honored for a combined 320 years of service to the Ellington community.
ELLINGTON, CT — The Ellington Volunteer Fire Department recently honored several members and community supporters during its 2026 Awards Banquet, recognizing decades of volunteer service and achievements within the department.
The banquet, held March 7, highlighted the commitment of Ellington’s volunteer firefighters and supporters who help the department respond to emergencies across the community.
One of the evening’s major recognitions was for long-time members whose combined service totaled 320 years. Honorees included Past Chief Arthur Caldwell for 70 years of service, Life Member Robert Sandberg Sr. for 65 years, Life Member Vincent Gambacorta for 50 years, Fire Chief Robert A. Smith for 45 years, Life Member Randall Smith for 40 years, Firefighter Dominick Cristelli for 35 years, and Life Member Kimberly Gambacorta for 15 years.

Several awards were also presented recognizing training accomplishments and service to the department.

Firefighter Megan Turley received the Firefighter Training Award for her dedication to continued education and professional development. Lieutenant Katherine Prato was honored with the Officer Training Award for her commitment to leadership development and training.

Unit Citation Awards were presented to Cole Prato and Regan Toomey for their coordinated actions during a structure fire incident.
The Chief’s Award was presented to Lori Spielman for her support of the department while serving as Ellington’s first selectman from 2015 to 2025.
Local businesses were also recognized for their ongoing support of the department. Business Support Awards were presented to LuAnn’s Bakery, Chuck Wagon, and Casey’s Café.
The evening concluded with the announcement of the department’s 2025 Firefighter of the Year, awarded to Megan Turley for her dedication, commitment to training, and service to the Ellington community.
