Ellington Obituary: Amby Emmick, Jr., 95

Condolences to his family and friends.

Amby S. Emmick, Jr., 95, of Ellington, passed from this life to his eternal home on Wednesday, August 26. He was married to his beloved wife, the late Frances R. Emmick for 57 years.

Amby was born January 16, 1920, in Leroy, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in Forestry and then enlisted in the Army serving in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Philippines and Greenland. He was a lifetime member in the Ellington VFW.

Amby was an Ellington resident for 50 years prior to making his home at St. Joseph’s Residence in Enfield this past September. He had a career in residential housing that spanned over 50 years as an architect, contractor, business owner and builder. Amby was an enthusiastic fan of the New York Yankees and the UConn Women’s Basketball team. He also enjoyed playing bridge, set back and bingo with his friends. Amby and Frances loved entertaining and were the most gracious, generous hosts. There was always an abundance of love, fun and great food whenever friends and family gathered.

Amby is survived by his three daughters, Wendy Smyth and husband Steve of Manchester, Judy Rodd and husband Ron of Bolivia, NC, Martha Emmick Hunt of Irvine, CA, 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Amby also leaves his dear friend, Muriel, who brought him great joy, companionship and countless hours of competitive card games and special lunches.

The family extends immense gratitude to the staff and his friends at St. Joseph’s Residence for all their love, compassion, prayers, kindness and support caring for Amby.

Calling hours will be on Monday, August 31 at St. Joseph’s Residence, 1365 Enfield Street, Enfield from 12:00-1:00pm with a service at 1:00 in the Chapel. There will be a time for refreshments and fellowship after the service. The burial will be held at 3:30 at the Ellington Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Amby’s memory to support the work and ministry of St. Joseph’s Residence, 1365 Enfield Street, Enfield, CT 06082.
