Ellington Obituary: Chester Zych, 93

Condolences to his family and friends.

Chester Walter Zych, 93, of Ellington, husband of the late Dorothy A. (Pierlewski) Zych, his loving wife of 56 years, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at home, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Zych was born in Allegheny City., PA. At an early age his family moved to Staten Island, N.Y., where he graduated from Port Richmond High School, during his Jr. and Sr. years he attended the Citizen’s Military Camp held under the auspices of the War Dept.of the United States at U.S. Army, Fort Dix, NJ, Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and received Advanced Marine Engineering Certification from Johns Hopkins University. He was a veteran of World War II and received commissions of Ensign U.S.M.M. and Lt. Jg U.S.N.R. Mr. Zych received the following decorations and medals, from the U.S. Navy: American Campaign, E.A.M.E. Campaign and from U.S.M.M.: Atlantic War Zone, Mediterranean Middle East War Zone, from U.S.S.R. the Patriotic War Medal.

He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Nuclear Society, American Legion Post #14 and was the Commander of VFW Post 241. For many years he volunteered for Veteran causes as a tribute to his pre-deceased brothers, Edward, Walter and Stanley and all who have served our great country with honor and pride.

Mr. Zych retired from Combustion Engineering in 1985 after 38 years of dedicated service in the construction of steam generators for Industrial and Utility Power Stations, both in the U.S.A. and in many foreign countries. He was a member of the C-E Retirees club. He enjoyed skiing, golfing and model ship building.

He is predeceased by all of his siblings Stanley, Walter, Stella, Edward, Paul and Dorothy.

He is survived by his daughter, Lorraine S. Miemiec, her husband Glenn Miemiec and two grandchildren, Christopher and Alexander, a sister-in-law Loretta Zych of Lafayette Hill, PA and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends may gather on Monday, August 31, 2015, 9:30 a.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor; followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m., at St. Luke Church, Ellington. Burial will follow at Valley Falls Cemetery in Vernon with Military Honors. His family will receive friends on Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 3 to 6 p.m., at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
