
Douglas Arthur Shorts, 71, of Ellington, beloved husband of Mary (Mallon) Shorts died peacefully on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford surrounded by his family.
He was born in Hartford on May 28, 1947, son of the late Joseph and Beulah (Robb) Shorts. He grew up in Manchester and was a graduate of Manchester High School and went on to graduate from the Morse School of Business. Douglas worked for ShopRite Supermarkets and retired in 2008 after over 40 years of service.
He served our country during Vietnam with the U.S. Army. Douglas was married to his high school sweetheart Mary Mallon on December 14, 1968 and together they settled in Ellington in 1977. He was his grandchildren’s #1 sports fan. He looked forward to sharing good times with great friends. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Douglas was a member of the Army Navy Club in Manchester.

Along with his wife, Mary M Shorts, he also leaves his daughters, Wendy Clark and her husband Gerald of Tolland, and Heather Thomas and her husband Timothy of Ellington; his brother, Wesley Shorts and his wife Linda of Vernon; his sister, Holly Stetz and her husband Ron of Sun City Center, FL and his beloved grandchildren, Mitchell Clark, Julia Clark, Cole Clark, Camden Thomas, and Chase Thomas. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Sheila Lewis and her husband Robert of Manchester, his brother-in-law, Lawrence Mallon of Manchester, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Douglas and his family are forever grateful to the UPenn Lung Center for the gift of life, not once but twice. A special thank you to Eric Hobson who graciously handled every question with patience.

His family will receive friends on Thursday, June 21, 2018, from 9 - 11 am at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd., (Rt. 83) Vernon. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home to begin at 11 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Ellington Cemetery.
