Enfield Wins Hard-Fought Soccer Game

The Spartans came from behind to take a lead, but the Raiders eventually came away with the game.

On Wednesday, the Somers High School girls’ soccer team fell 4-3 to visiting Enfield in a game that Somers Coach Michael Pantuosco said felt like three different games.

Enfield dominated the first half, capitalizing on some defensive lapses by Somers to score a pair of breakaway goals. Kaylee Palmatier stole the ball about 30 yards out and went in alone, beating Somers goalie Hailee Stetson on a low corner shot.

Just five minutes later, Enfield’s Olivia Corrona broke through on the left wing and went in alone, beating Stetson to the near side, for a 2-0 lead which held up through the half.

Somers came out like a different team in the second half with constant pressure on Enfield.

About 12 minutes in, Somers thought it had cut the lead on a goal by Kelsie Sloan but it was disallowed on a foul by Somers. Minutes later, midfielder Kathryn O’Connor scored on a direct kick from just inside 20 yards, firing it into the far side of the net.

Somers kept up the pressure and four minutes later, Jaclyn O’Grady scored when she fired a shot from the corner of the 18, which Enfield’s goalie, Sydney Ballou, couldn’t handle cleanly because of the confusion in front of her. That made the game at 2-2.

Somers was relentless and eventually took the lead on a perfect through ball from Tori Laires to Kathryn LaVallee, who beat Ballou to the ball and tucked it in for a 3-2 lead.

The lead was short-lived however as Palmatier took the next kickoff and dribbled through four Somers defenders before placing a left footer in the corner to tie things back up.

It stayed that way for another few minutes when another Somers defensive breakdown led to a break up the middle for Corrona who netted the game winner with less than 10 minutes to go.

The game got more physical and Somers ended up using three goalies due to injuries.

Somers (3-4) will look to get back on track this Friday in Hartford versus SMSA. Enfield (6-2) will host Canton the same day.
