ELLINGTON, CT — As Americans solemnly remember the tragic events that shook the nation 19 years ago, a small pastry shop said thank you to the first responders who help keep the towns it serves safe.

Gerry's Donuts of Ellington offered free doughnuts Friday morning to any member of the Ellington, Vernon and Tolland police, fire and EMS departments with an ID badge.

"I think it's nice that the first responders are remembered with these nice gestures of coffee, tea and things like that," Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Chief Peter Hany Sr. said. "Gerry's is very community-minded, and he has good doughnuts too."
