First Town Administrator Hired To Begin Work In Ellington

ELLINGTON, CT —A U.S. Army veteran and former police chief in neighboring South Windsor has been hired to serve as Ellington's first town administrator.

Matthew Reed was unanimously appointed to the role by the Board of Selectmen at its July 10 meeting. He begins his new duties Aug. 14.

Reed has a background in law, having held positions at the University of Connecticut and the Capital Region Education Council, practicing in the areas of employment, municipal and administrative law. Most recently, he has worked for the State of Connecticut, both as a staff attorney and hearing officer with the Freedom of Information Commission, and as a staff attorney at the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP).

A staunch advocate for open government, reed has been the recipient of the Bice Clemow Award
from the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information for his leadership in support of open
and accountable government. He also served on the board of directors of the Connecticut Foundation for Open Government.

"I am excited to return to my roots in municipal service," reed said in a written statement. "I love to work and have enjoyed all of my experiences since leaving the police department, but nothing is more satisfying than working directly with local residents, elected leaders and staff to help make the community a great place to live, work and grow. Having lived in the area for 25 years, my family has enjoyed many great Ellington experiences, from day camp when the kids were little to flying lessons at the airport to enjoying the nature of Crystal Lake. Ellington is simply a great community, and I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it."

First Selectman Lori Spielman wrote, "I’m thrilled that Matt will be joining Ellington as our first town administrator. He's a great fit, and his expertise will be a huge asset for us moving forward."
