A million years ago in a town far away.... ok, in 1997 in Tolland, my husband and I took a leap through my job as Youth Services Coordinator and began a summer theatre program. It was a blast and much to our delight it has continued to this day!
At the time it was so important to me that it be a fun and engaging way to expose to kids to the theatre and to older students and grown-ups who could be wonderful role models.
Fast forward to today. I've been absorbed in my work with young children and families teaching the award winning Music Together curriculum to families and preschools for 13 years. At Arts from the heart, llc we've been discussing the kinds of programs and activities we would like to make available to families. Theatre has been a natural avenue to pursue and after a lot of conversations and revisions, we are introducing "The Play's the Thing" this summer!
For me, musical theatre is an amazing way for kids of all ages to come together to play and learn and grow. We've created a program where younger ones (ages 5-9) can spend the afternoons playing and developing their natural tendencies for drama and make-believe, and older kids (ages 10-15) can work together in a workshop style in the early evenings to produce a musical. The end result July 25th and 26th will bring them together to perform the musical "Honk! Jr.".
A Jr. version of the musical "Honk!", this show is a lovely retelling of the Ugly Duckling story~ the music is charming and the characters are hilarious.
