Kids Activities Abound At Ellington Farmers Market

From the Kids Power of Produce Club to the Zucchini 500 Drag Race there are loads of activities planned for kids at the market this summer.

The Ellington Farmers’ Market has a great lineup of activities for kids this summer. The Kids Power of Produce Club held every Saturday through Labor Day empowers children to make healthy food choices. Children ages 5-12 can participate in a food-related activity, sample fresh produce, and receive a $2 token to purchase fresh produce each week.

A Patriotic Hat Parade will take place on July 3rd. Ellington Youth Services will be helping children make a patriotic hat to join the parade around the park. The parade will take place at 10:30 am.

Kids can get up close and personal to a variety of bugs, reptiles, and amphibians on July 9th. Dr. Bugman will be bringing his exotic pets for all to meet and Pease Bees will be showcasing a Living Bee Hive.

Youth Market Day takes place on August 6th. Youth 17 years and under can apply online to sell items they have grown or made with minimal adult help. Applications must be submitted to participate. The link to apply can be found at the market website www.ellingtonfarmersmarket.org under the Kids at the Market tab.

An Edible Animal Contest will be held on August 20th. Kids can use their imaginations to create an animal out of produce and any other edible items. Bring the creation to the market at 9:00 am where market customers will vote on their favorites. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.

Kids ID Day will be held on August 27th. The Connecticut State Police will be on hand to fingerprint and photograph children to help parents create an ID kit to be used in the case of emergencies. Participation in all market events is free.

The market features 40 regular weekly vendors with additional guest vendors for specific weekly themes. A complete schedule can be found at www.ellingtonfamrersmarket.org. Live music is performed weekly. The market is a 501c3 non-profit organization and continues to match SNAP and Senior and WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers.
