Twice annually the people in the Somers/Ellington area join together in a show of community and support for worthy causes. A party is held to raise funds to help kids. The December Holiday Palooza is an annual event designed to raise funds for the Nicholas David Coleman Foundation which provides many scholarships to Somers High students in the name of Nick Coleman who was tragically lost in an auto accident in 2012. The 2014 winter Palooza is scheduled for December 13,2014.
The Summer Palooza for 2014 focuses on the upcoming journey of Somers Jr. Alex Coverdill. Coverdill will be leaving June 18,2014 to travel to Pittsburgh to compete for a spot on the Team USA boat headed for a European tour this summer. Currently ranked as the 10th best under 18 rower in the world, Coverdill needs to raise $6000 to make the journey. Summer Palooza will go a long way toward raising those funds. The public is asked to attend and experience the traditions of Palooza. “Our events feature great food, great music, terrific raffle prizes and a strong sense of community” says Erin Tynan one of the event coordinators. “These things are all about our local kids and helping them achieve lofty goals” “ but we have a really good time doing that”.
